Dismissal without prejudice
A dismissal of the case whereby the plaintiff is still able to open the same case against the defendant in the future; a preliminary dismissal.
Dismissal with prejudice
A dismissal of a case which bars the opposing party from pursuing the same case against the defendant in the future; a final dismissal.
Preliminary hearing
Hearing granted to those charged by information rather than proof or a indictment, in which a judge determines whether or not there is enough probable cause to proceed with the case.
Detention hearing
A proceeding before a judge to determine whether a defendant will be held or released while awaiting trial.
Pre-trial conference
A meeting between attorneys, usually without their clients present to discuss possible resolutions of criminal, civil and juvenile matters.
Plea hearings
Proceedings in which defendant’s formally acknowledges guilt and waves right to a jury trial.
Sentencing
A hearing held after the defendant has been convicted in which the judge imposes the sentence.
