What is a simple sentence?
- 1 independent clause
- 0 subordinate clauses
- 0 or infinite phrases
- compound SUBJ, V (and/or)
Example:

NO CLAUSES - NO INTRO WORDS - EXPRESSES A COMPLETE THOUGHT
What is a compound sentence?
- 2 + independent clauses
- 0 subordinate clauses and joined by punctation( , or ; ) to a coordinating conjunction
- OR joined by an ADV
Example
You (SUBJ) should (V) really invest (V) in studying for your exam; however, make sure (to get plenty of sleep as well. (INF clause))
What is a Complex Sentence?
- 1 independent clause
- 1 or infinite subordinate clauses
Example
(While I wanted to give you an interesting example sentence) ADV Clause (Subord) ; (what I need to do now) N Clause (Subj) (is hurry to the review.) Indp. clause
What is a Compound - Complex Sentence?
- 2 or infinite indp. clauses
- 1 + subordinate clauses
Example
(Chelsea is only seven years old (IND clause)), but (she can already play the violin better (than her tutor can (SUB clause))(IND clause))
What is an Independent Clause?
- expresses a complete thought
- can stand as a sentence because independent clauses can end before the sentence does
