What is a clause
A group of words ( that make sense as a unit ) which contains a subject and a verb
What determines the type of sentence
The way the clauses are joined
What is a main clause
This is the independent clause. It is a complete sentence and can stand alone
What is a subordinate clause
This is the dependant clause. It is part of a sentence and can not stand alone.
What is a simple sentence
It is a sentence with only one main clause, this means it only has one subject and one verb. It can not have 2 main clauses or a subordinating clause.
What is the function of a simple sentence
They can be dramatic and are ideal for creating suspense. They are very clear so they are used for giving instructions. They feel safe, simple, reassuring and straightforward, that is why you often find them in children’s books.
What are compound sentences
A sentence that has 2 or more simple sentences which are linked by a coordinating conjunction or a semi-colon.
What are the coordinating conjunctions
FANBOYS - For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So
What are complex sentences
A sentence that has 2 or more clauses: one main clause and at least one subordinate clause. These two clause are joined by a subordinating conjunction
What are some of the subordinating conjunctions
Because, although, if even, when, therefore, then, than, after… etc
What is a compound-complex sentence
A sentence that is a combination of a compound and a complex sentence. A compound-complex sentence needs to have at least 2 main clauses and at least 1 subordinating clause
