What is tone
Tone is the attitude a writer takes toward their subject and audience
When asked what tone something is what must your answer be
An adjective
What questions must you ask yourself when identifying tone in a passage
- what is the passage’s subject, and who is its audience?
- analyse the diction of the passage. Are there any unusual or highly emotive words?
- what is the connotation of the key words in the passage?
- what detail ( information that appeals to the senses ) is included?
- what images ( figures of speech ) are used, are they positive or negative?
- what feeling does the author want to generate?
What are some happy tone words
Affectionate, amiable, cheerful, compassionate, cordial, enthusiastic, flattering, friendly, genial, jovial, joyful, relieved
What are some sad tone words
Anxiously, bitter, blunt, gloomy, melancholy, ominous, reproachful, weary
What are some sarcastic/ rude tone words
Abrupt, biting, rude, blunt, callous, contemptuous, curt, defiant, hostile, impatient, insolent, ironic, malicious, mocking, ominous, scathing, sneering, spiteful, vicious, belligerent, pugnacious
