- Both have God- complex

Similarities between Katniss and Truman
- both unwilling starts of the show
- both loyal to those they love
- both are sacrifices. Katniss for her sister and district 2 and Truman comforts 1000s of people.
How are both characters exploited
- Katniss is used as a means to control the people of Panem
- used to ‘feed’ Snow’s lust for power
- Truman used to “give hope and joy to millions” as well as generate enormous amounts of money for Christof
- used to feed Christof’s God-complex
Similarities in the environment
- both shows the environment is manipulated to capture the interest of the audience
- HG: fire balls, no water, temperature
- TS: the storm at sea, fathers death
Similarities in he audience
- audience is complicit. They go along with and enjoy what they are given
- without buy-in from the audience, both shows would fail
How are both the HG and the TS controlled by dictators
- Christof is the dictator in the TS
- Capitol controls Panem in the HG ( Snow is just the current dictator )
- manipulation is 24/7
- both ‘dictators’ angry that they have been outwitted
Both shows exploit family relationships
- Capitol manipulates Katniss’s relationship with prim and mother
- Christof controls Truman through his mother and b killing then bring his father back
- both have their ‘love life’ manipulated for the sake of the viewers

Both shows need the sponsorship and buy-in of advertisers/ sponsors
What is the similarity in betting
- in both shows the audience bets on the winner of the final outcome
What are the similarities after the show
Both Katniss and Truman have to adjust to a new lifestyle and world
What are the differences between the characters
Hunger games:
- Katniss: hard, determined, very. Mature for her age, defiant, unsentimental and practical. She confronts her challenges. She is disgruntled and often unappealing to the audience ( Haymitch struggles to tap into her appeal ). Audience may feel admiration, but seldom sympathy
Truman Show:
- immature, never really had to look after himself ( although he doesn’t know this ) Truman for the first 30 years of his life, hid behind his fears, he is controlled by his fears. Sunny personality, very likeable, appeals to the audience, child like, audience feels sympathy for him
What are the differences in the reality TV
Hunger games:
- aware of the cameras
- plays to the cameras- behaves differently in front of the cameras
- manipulated by the cameras, but manipulates back ( flowers on Rue’s grave, father’s song )
Truman Show:
- unaware of cameras
- Acts naturally ( as far as his environment will let him ) all the time
- unable to use the cameras to his advantage
What are the differences in the environment
Hunger Games:
- hostile
- conflict with the environment is part of the appeal of the show
Truman Show:
- perfect
- audience envies Truman’s perfect lifestyle
What are the differences in the audience
Hunger Games:
- bets on the odds of survival
- not a sympathetic environment
Truman Show:
- audience want him to escape, but at the same time will mourn the loss of the show
- very sympathetic ( except the security guards )
Differences in the dictators
Hunger Games
- dictator “out smarted” by Katniss and Peeta with the nightlock
Truman Show
- Christof fails to see that Truman really would leave the show. He believes right to the end that he can manipulate Truman and convince him to stay in the show.
What are the differences in the sponsorship
Hunger Games:
- sponsorship is for the good of the character
Truman Show:
- sponsorship is for the good of the producer and the advertisers. Truman does not not reap any benefit
What are the differences after the show
Hunger Games:
- Katniss has to accept that her life will never be her own. Even her “love life” will be controlled by the Capitol
Truman Show:
- Truman is now free. He can control his life and look for a love of his own, but will he ever truly be free? What will be the reaction of the fans and paparazzi?
