What does the simplest sentence contain
A subject and a verb
Eg. Josh jumped.
What are participles
Words that can do the job of a verb, an adjective or a noun. Present participles end in ‘ing’ and past participles end in ‘ed’
What are infinitives
A verb preceded by the word ‘to’
Eg. I love TO SING.
What is the object
The object is the part of the sentence that receives the verb. It has the verb done to it.
Eg. He hit the BOOK.
What do you do to find the object
Identify the verb and ask ‘who’ or ‘what’ is receiving the verb.
What are transitive verbs
Verbs that are followed by objects are transitive verbs because the action is TRANSFERRED to the object.
Eg. He SENT Robert a letter. - transitive verb because he sent the letter
What are intransitive verbs
Verbs that do not have an object are called intransitive because the cation of the verb is NOT being transferred to an object
Eg. She SLEEPS too much. - intransitive verb
What is an indirect object
An object that is indirectly affected by the verb. A noun or pronoun that receives the object
Eg. Jane gave Mary the flowers- Mary is the indirect object because she is receiving the flowers.
What is a direct object
A noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb
What is the subject complement
The adjective, noun or pronoun that follows the linking verb ( am, is, are, was where, has been, are being, might have been ) complements either describe the subject or tell us what the subject is
What is an object complement
Similar to the subject complement except it describes the object.
