Criminal court breakdown
1) Criminal - CPS decides whether a case is brought on behalf of the state
2) Convicted if guilty , acquitted if not guilty.
3) proof required beyond reasonable doubt
4) custodial / non - custodial sentence given
5) defendant may appeal courts verdict / sentence
(Magistrate/ Crown Court )
Civil Courts
1) Case brought by individual / group / organisation
2) Defendant found liable/non liable in regard to issue
3) Evidence must be produced to support claim
4) compensation or injunction granted
5) either party can appeal courts decisions
6) County court / High court
Ombudsmen
Official appointed to check on government ativity on behalf of citzen and investigate complaints made.
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)
Less formal, cheaper and speedy ourcome to case.
Negotiation , Mediation, Conciliation , Arbitration ( legally binding)
Supreme Court
Final court of appeal in UK for civil cases and criminal cases from Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland. It hears cases of great public importance affecting the whole population.
