Types of Research and Research Methods Flashcards
What type of research methods emplores interview based 1on1 questioning
case study
What type of research methods has no control group or “normal” group and lacks scientific controls
case study
What type of research methods has the researcher observing a person or group of persons.
Naturalistic observation
what research method lacks controls and may have observer bias. There may be a real behavior and an interpreted behavior
naturalistic observation
this type of research method has a limited recruitment pool and in some cases lack controls as there is no direct criteria used to be in a comparison group
laboratory studies
To mimic a bar environment a lab put a bar in the lab space to create the bar experience
alc lab
what is the difference between an MRI and fMRI
MRI=brain anatomy
fMRI= brain function
what type of test puts a marker in your bloodstream that attaches to the object of interest. For example, proteins in the body
PET (positron Emission Tomography)

This form of self-report includes clinical and general populations that sometimes can lack honesty, have gaps in memory, or have people misinterpret the question.
survey
Everyone has a different interpretation of the question based on personal experience. Some people are in denial and lie as well
this type of population is observed in a controlled setting
clinical population
What are some ways to increase accuracy in surveys?
-confidentiality (saying that the info will NOT be shared)
-creating a setting that encourages honesty (Ex: don’t go to jail asking people about their DUI’s)
- making sure the participants are drug-free at the time of the survey
-having clearly worded objective questions
-create memory aids ( alc timeline follow back) to help increase the accurate information.
The goal of this survey is to establish the overall prevalence of use in lifetime, past yr.,past month for a variety of substances
The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH)
(may be missing the most at risk, issues with usage rates and forgetting, but high generalizability.)
The goal of this survey is to determine which drugs are the MOST dangerous
Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN)
This organization functions by collecting incidence reports from emergency rooms and medical examiners
