Types of Practice Flashcards
what are the four types of practice?
- massed practice
- distributed practice
- varied practice
- fixed practice
what is massed practice?
massed practice is a continuous practice session w/ no rest intervals between attempts at the skill(s)
what are the advantages of massed practice?
- good for habitual response/closed skills
- good for grooving in a skill
- enables formation of motor programmes
- enhances over learning
- increases fitness
what are the disadvantages of massed practice?
- no time for feedback IF doing wrong movement etc..
- fatigued easily = little rest
when is massed practice used?
- discrete skills
- simple skills
- closed skills
who is massed practice used for?
- experienced, older, fitter, more motivated individuals
what is distributed practice?
distributed practice is when there are rest intervals attempts
what are the advantages of distributed practice?
- facilitates coaching + feedback
- allows mental practice/rehearsal
- allows recovery/ doing tasks unrelated to the session
- allows the individual to become remotivated
- less mental pressure
what are the disadvantages of distributed practice?
- negative transfer: if use of alternate activity interferes w/ task/skill being learnt
e. g. activity used to teach something takes over the actual skill being learnt - time consuming
when is distributed practice used?
- complex skills
- serial skills
- continuous skills
- dangerous skills
who is distributed practice used for?
beginners, less experienced, less motivated, limited in preparation
what is varied practice?
varied practice is practice done in a more unpredictable way + changing environment
what are the advantages of varied practice?
- helps w/ improving decision making + gaining experience = adapting to changing conditions of sport
- conditions reflect ‘real game’ situations = game specific
when is varied practice used?
- open skills e.g. tackle in rugby
what is fixed practice?
fixed practice is done in a stable + predictable environment
