instrumental power
when the text producer/speaker already has power over their receiver, usually due to existing authority or laws
can be imposed by both groups or individuals
influential power
when the text producer/speaker attempts to gain influence over the receiver through techniques such as persuasion
political power
power that is exercised by those who have the backing of the law
e.g. politicians or the government
personal power
power held by individuals as a result of their role or occupation in an organisation; for instance the managing director in a lare organisation
social group power
power held as a result of being a member of a dominant social group
can be determined by social variables such as gender, class, race, ethnicity etc.
