Types of Organic Reactions Flashcards
What is an unsaturated molecule
One that contains a double bond, means another molecule can join on to it in an addition reaction
What is a saturated molecule
One that contains only single bonds
What is an addition reaction
A reaction in which two molecules add together to form a single product, characteristic of unsaturated compounds
What is a substitution reaction
A reaction in which one atom/group is replaced by another atom/group, characteristic of halogenoalkanes
What are elimination reactions
Reactions which produce an unsaturated product(double bond) by loss of atoms/groups from adjacent carbon atoms. Splits off a simple molecules from a larger molecule leaving a double bond
What are hydrolysis reactions
Reactions in which a compound splits apart in a reaction involving water
What is addition polymerisation
Where many smaller molecules called monomers with double bonds join up in a long chain to form a polymer
