Types of movement Flashcards
Define horizontal flexion
A movement that starts with the limb abducted and then moves towards the front of the body (decreasing the angle in the horizontal plane)
E.g. bringing elbow across the body during a pass in rugby
Define lateral flexion
A sideways bending movement at the spine or waist
E.g. goal keeper saving a goal
Define hyperextension
The extension of a limb beyond its normal range of movement
E.g. high jumpers spine during the high jump
Define horizontal extension
A movement that starts with the limb abducted in front of you and then moves back towards the side of the body (increasing the angle in the horizontal plane)
E.g. straightening elbow in backhand shot
Define shoulder flexion
Movement of the arm in a forwards and upwards movement
E.g. upward phase of lateral raise
Define shoulder extension
Movement of the arm in a backwards direction (downwards)
E.g. bringing arm backwards for an under arm bowl
Define medial rotation
Rotation towards the direction of body’s movement (midline)
E.g. a batters knee in baseball when swinging
Define lateral rotation
Rotation away from the body’s midline
E.g. a golfers knee in the backswing of their shot
Define retraction
Posterior - backwards movement of a body part/structure
E.g. a rower rowing the oars
Define protraction
Anterior - forwards movement of a body part/structure
E.g. the forward movement in rowing
Define pronation
Inward rotation of palm or outward rotation of foot
E.g. palm facing down when dribbling basketball
Define supination
Outward rotation of palm or inward rotation of foot
E.g. palm facing upwards to toss ball for tennis serve
Define circumduction
Circular movements of a body part in a conical movement
E.g. bowling a cricket ball
