define nominal scale of measurement
Describes a measurement system where there are differences in quality rather than quantity. Nomin, meaning name. These measure items that are categorical or discrete in nature. Variables are labels, always qualitative. (Political party membership)
define ordinal scale of measurement
variables imply intensity or severity. Assigns numbers to observation in a sequence, from lesser to greater; explains how variables can be ordered along some type of continuum; have rank; (USDA stickers placed on cuts of meat (prime, lean, etc.)
define interval scale of measurement
Interval scales are numeric scales in which we know not only the order, but also the exact differences between the values. The classic example of an interval scale is temperature because the difference between each value is the same. They don’t have a “true zero.” For example, there is no such thing as “no temperature.”
define ratio scale of measurement
uses absolute zero corresponding to an absence of the trait or characteristic being measured; usually used in physical and biological sciences (height, weight, speed of travel, Percentage scores on an exam)
