Kinship
refers to the ways in which people selectively
interpret reproduction and nurture
“Who’s child is that?”
“Whom do I take care of?”
Multifunctional: organizes many aspects of life (work, inheritance, rituals, culture)
Diversity in how groups are organized: no culture can keep track of ALL kinship
- Forget or ignore remote relationship
- Emphasize some relationships over others
Clans
descend from an unclear ancestor
Shared ancestor •Clan sister or clan brother Extends beyond lineage Related only through clan •Can determine territory •Totemic Power or naming Symbols; share name •Have multiple lineages
Marriage
culturally defined relationship between a man and a women from different families, which regulates sex and legitimizes children
Romantic love
Economic and social dimensions: decision of alliance; goes beyond romantic love
Bride price
the groom’s family honors the bride/her family by giving the family something
Bride service
groom serves bride’s family
Dowry
bride pays the groom’s family
Procreation
marriage provides boundaries of who’s lineage the child is a part of
Endogamy
marry within the group
ethnic, religious, kinship oriented
Exogamy
marry outside of the group
Plural marriage (polygamy)
Two types: polygyny and polyandry
Polygyny
one man, multiple women
Polyandry
one woman, multiple men
Fraternal polyandry
multiple brothers marry one woman
Examples
- Kashmir: patrilineal/ patrilocal: your ethnicity is connected to your father’s ethnicity
- Hopi: matrilineal/ matrilocal: lineage passes from mother to daughter/
- Property is inherited though the mother/ children part of wife’s lineage
- Rituals belong to lineage
- Father’s role: more of a friend/ tolerant/ work for wife’s lineage
- Doesn’t discipline the children (ie. Maternal uncle)
