Types Of Long Term Memory Flashcards
Episodic memory definition?
Specific personal events and their context influenced by emotions affected by the degree of processing of information at coding with highly processed events recalled more easily it helps individuals to distinguish the difference between real events and the imagination / delusions
Episodic memory examples
When someone’s birthday is for example the trauma of your child going to school for the first time your friends wedding your first date
Episodic memory biological links
Write prefrontal cortex brain area is associated with initial coding of episodic memories visual auditory olfactory connected together in their anterior hippocampus
Semantic memory definition?
Contains all knowledge stronger if process more deeply better sustained over time than episodic memories knowledge becomes increasingly divorced over time
Semantic memory examples
Eiffel tower is your address words of a song no one key your parents I’ll do what I want to
Semantic memory biological links
Left prefrontal cortex anterior temporal load and that anterior hippocampus
Procedural memory definition?
Implicit memory permitting individuals to perform motor skills that are learned non-declarative learning important motor skills helping individuals to speak automatically procedure and semantic memories work together
Procedural memory examples
Juggle ride a bike walking dressing
Clive wearing
A virus caused him to get encephalirl Ann inflammation on the brain it’s attacked an area crucial for memory and learning leaving him with amnesia he could still play music but he was unaware of it due to procedural memory he records first movement of awakeness over and over again he only remembers his wife no memory of any events he can remember key numbers and names from childhood can speak and has good vocab he can read and write but can’t remember doing either so he still has procedural memory but not semantic or episodic
Tulving
Method:participants were injected with particles of radioactive gold to track the blame in a PET scan he scan brains whilst they thought about historical fats semantic memory or childhood experiences episodic memory
Results: when using semantic memory historical facts would flow increase at the anterior temple lobe experiences but flow increased in the right prefrontal cortex when they thought about childhood experiences episodic memories
Evaluation: data from three participants were inconsistent and couldn’t be analyzed so extraneous variables might not have been accounted for all three participants were professors sample doesn’t represent general public researchers can’t control if participants have intrusive thoughts unrelated to the memory being investigated lacks internal validity
