Types of immune systems Flashcards
What is immunity?
The body’s ability to respond to a threat on an individualized basis
What are our four types of immunity?
1) Innate (non-specific) immunity
2)adaptive (specific) immunity
3)active immunity
4)passive immunity
Innate immunity
-mechanisms that are present at birth
-GENRAL effect against a variety of pathogens
-requires NO prior exposure and antibody production is uninvolved
Adaptive immunity
-A type of immunity NOT present at birth
-effective for a SPECIFIC pathogen
-generally aquired AFTER exposure to a pathogen
What is adaptive immunity depenedent on?
Lymphocyte activity
Active immunity
antibodies DEVELOP after exposure to a specific antigen
What are examples of active immunity?
enviormental exposure and vaccaines
passive immunity
antibodies TRANSFERED from another source
What are examples of passive immunity?
mom, breastmilk, injection (like an injection of penicillan or antibiotic)
The adaptive immune system is….
(4 things)
1.Specific
2.versatile
3.memory
4.tolerance
When the adaptive immune system gets triggered there are 2 seperate pathways that are coorinated by_____
T cells and B cellss
Cell mediated immunity
-T cells responding which is a defense agaisnt cells and pathogens inside those cells
Antibody-mediated immunity
-B cells responsing which is a defense agaisnt antigens and pathogens in body fluids
When an antigen binds to antibodies they are presented to ______
Lymphocytes
Initial primary response (first exposure)
-B cells lead and T cells follow
-B cells and T cells activated
-Plasma B cells differntiate
-specific antibody levels increase
-takes longer to beat
