Innate immunity mechanisms Flashcards
Physical barrier
Things built into us that keep hazardous materials outisde the body.
Skin, skin oils, cillary lining, LOW ph in tummy, tears, saliva
Phagocytes
microphages (neutrophils and eosiophils) and macrophages (monocytes) thats attack pathogens and remove them
Immunological surveillance
-our body is constantly monitoring normal tissues for presense of cancer cells or viral infections
-NK cells are activated to identify pathogen and act to destroy them
inferons
Chemical messengers (cytokines) trigger production of antiviral proteins which will interfere with viral replication inside cell
-does NOT destroy viruses
Complement system
a series of circulation proteins that assist antibodies with destruction of pathogens
How many circulatory proteins do we have that are apart of the complement system?
ELEVEN!!
Inflammatory response
- A LOCAL response that is tissue level
-limits spread of infection and facilitates repair of damgaed cells
-release of histamine to increase temp
Fever
-A SYSTEMIC response that increases metabolism, accelerates pathogen defense, and inhibits some pathogens
