immune system basics Flashcards
Antibodies are also known as what?
Immunoglobins
What is a pathogen?
Microscopic organisms such as bacteria
Antibodies
-Proteins that are made from B cells to protect the body against pathoghens by their ability to identify antigens
What are the 5 classes at antibodies?
igA,
igD
igE
IgG
igM
Antigens
-molecule that antibodies are able to reconize
-usually a protien/CHO chain that is bound to a pathogen
Leukocyte
A type of WBC that has several sub categories including:
Neutrophils, eosionphils, basophils, monocytes
Neutrophils
MICROphages that destroy pathogens
Eosionophils
MICROphages that destroy pathogens
Monocyte
activated in response to inflammation that have the ability to divide into macrophages
Basophil
WBC that secrete hisatmine, which increases inflammatory response at a site of injury or infection
What are Lymphocytes? and what are the 3 types?
-Lymphocytes are made in bone marrow, lymphatic tissues, and lymphatic organs
-3 sub catagories: B cells, T cells, and Natural killer (NK) cells
B cells
-make up 10-15% of lymphocyes
-typically found in bone marrow or lymph nodes
-have specific antibodies on surface
-can detect specific antigens in NATIVE form
T-cells
-make up 80% of lymphocyes
-made by bone marrow and matured by thymus
-Detect antigens in PROCESSED form
(antigens + MHC)
Cytoxic T cells:
AKA T Killer Cellers
-Attack foreign cell or virus infected cells
Helped T-Cells
Stimulate activation and function of B and T cells
