Types of guidance Flashcards
What is mechanical guidance
Give an example
Using aids or equipment to help learn a skill
eg- a pool float for swimming
What are the advantages of mechanical guidance
Can reduce fear
Builds confidence and motivation
Can isolate a specific part of a skill to develop
Can be used for all level performers
What are disadvantages of mechanical guidance
Performer can become reliant
False sense of kinaesthesis
Can restrict the performer so they cannot fully do the skill
What is manual guidance
Give an example
Using physical support from another person such as a coach
eg- coach moving performers arm when learning a tennis serve
What are the advantages of manual guidance
Reduces fear
improves confidence and motivation
clearer understanding of how to do the skill
can isolate part of the skill to improve
promotes kinaesthesis
What are the disadvantages of manual guidance
False sense of kinaesthesis
Can become reliant
Reduces motivation if too reliant or is removed
What is verbal guidance
Give an example
Telling a performer how to do a skill
eg- a coach telling a footballer how to pass the ball
What are the advantages of verbal feedback
Quick to do- many learners can listen at once
Questioning techniques can lead to effective learning
Can be motivational and improve confidence
Ca help improve the understanding.of a skill
What are the disadvantages of verbal feedback
If inaccurate, incorrect performance will be learnt
Can be information overload for cognitive learners so ineffective
Can be tedious
Can be confusing
What is visual guidance
Give an example
Showing a performer how to do a skill with the use of videos, demonstrations and photos
What are the advantages of visual guidance
Helps create a mental image
good for cognitive learners
encourages observational learning
Better understanding of the skill
More effective if done by a role model
What are the disadvantages of visual guidance
Demonstration could be incorrect- leading to incorrect learning
May be too quick for the performer to process
Static images don’t show how the movement Is produced
Demonstration may be confusing/ unclear to the performer
