Transfer of skills Flashcards
What is positive transfer
Give an example
Where one skill or movement AIDS the learning of another
eg- sprinter using same technique for long jump run up
What is negative transfer
Give an example
Where one skill or movement HINDERS the learning of another
eg- squash shot uses a loose wrist, tennis requires a strong wrist
What is Bilateral transfer
Give an example
A skill learned is transferred from LIMB TO LIMB
eg- basketballers dribbling with both hands
What is Proactive transfer
Give an example
Where a previously learned skill affects the learning of a new skill
eg- a football throw-in helps with a netball overhead throw
What is retroactive transfer
Give an example
Where the Current learning of a skill affects the performance of a perviously learnt skill
eg- netball player returns to netball after shooting in basketball and isn’t used to having no backboard again
How do you optimise the effect of positive transfer
Clear demonstrations
ensure previously learnt skills are mastered/ grooved
use similar skills to promote transfer
avoid practising skills that might cause confusion close together
