Metaphor
Comparing two things without singing “like” or “as”.
Ex: It’s raining cats and dogs.
Personification
Giving human qualities to something that is not human.
Ex: The leaves danced.
Simile
Comparing two things saying “like” or “as”.
Ex: She is quiet as a mouse.
Alliteration
Repeating the same sound at the start of a word in a sentence or sentences.
Ex: Shelly sells sea shells by the sea shore.
Hyperbole
An extreme exaggeration.
Ex: I’m so hungry, I could eat a horse.
Onomatopoeia
A word that describes what something sounds like.
Ex: Hiss!
Rhyme Scheme
The rhyming pattern in stanzas.
Ex: The itsy-bitsy spider crawled up the water spout.
Down came the rain and washed the spider out.
Imagery
Describing something to a reader using the five senses.
Ex: The fire was hot on her skin. The smoke and ash made her eyes burn.
Rhythm
The pattern of sounding syllables in a sentence/stanzas.
Ex: I like to live by the sea.
