Conjunctive adverbs
words that join independent clauses into one sentence. A conjunctive adverb helps you create a shorter sentence. When you use a conjunctive adverb, put a semicolon (;) before it and a comma (,) after it.
EX: therefore, then, however, consequently.
Simple sentence
a sentence consisting of only one clause, with a single subject and predicate.
EX: My mom wrapped the Christmas presents.
Compound sentence
a sentence with more than one independent clause. The clauses are joined with a semicolon or a FANBOYS.
EX: My mom wrapped the Christmas presents, and my brother baked cookies.
Complex sentence
A sentence that has an dependent clause or two.
My mom baked cookies while my brother wrapped presents. OR flipped.
Semicolon
;
A punctuation mark that designates a pause, usually between two clauses.
Subordinate/dependent clause
This is a group of words that CANNOT be alone in a complete sentence. It helps complete the idea.
After eating dinner.
Independent clause
This is a clause that CAN be alone in a sentence. It has a subject and a predicate.
FANBOYS
Words that connect words/phrases/clauses.
