Order/Sequence
Text outlines chronological events or a list of steps in a procedure.
First, next, History, instruction, steps.
Description
Text provides descriptive details about characteristics, actions, etc….
Adjectives, examples, characteristics, mental images.
Definition
Text tells us about the parts that make up a whole. The definition is stated and expanded on with examples and restatements.
Was/is, are/were, define, meaning, boldface words, italicized words.
Cause/Effect
The text describes an event and the results of that event.
If/Then, because, as a result, due to.
Classification
Writers sort items or ideas into categories according to commonalities.
One type, include, for instance, such as, characteristics
Compare/Contrast
The text talks about similarities and differences between people, places, things, etc…
Same, different, both/neither, on the other hand.
Advantage/Disadvantage
Text covers the reason on both sides of an issue or topic. Gives pros and cons.
An advantage, in favor of, however, a disadvantage.
Problem/Solution
The text gives information about an issue and explains one or more solution.
Problem, solution, solve.
