Types of experiments and control Flashcards
What is realism?
Studies should represent real-life behaviours, studies should have mundane realism
Low mundane realism means we cant use the study to explain real-life behaviours
What is randomisation?
Helps to reduce the researchers influence on the study, wherever possible materials should be randomised
What is standardisation?
All ppts should experience the study in the same way
What is a pilot study?
A small scale version carried out prior
What is a lab experiment?
The IV is controlled by the researcher, the setting is controlled
What is a strength of a lab experiment?
Easier to controll extraneous variables, easy to replicate
What is a weakness of a lab experiment?
More demand characteristics, investigator effects are more likely, may have low mundane realism
What is a field experiment?
The IV is controlled by the researcher but the setting is natural
What is a strength of a field experiment?
Less demand characteristics, more realistic
What is a weakness of a field experiment?
Harder to control extraneous variables, harder to replicate
What is a natural experiment?
The IV is a naturally occuring situation or event, the environment is natural
What is a strength of a natural experiment?
Highest in mundane realism, demand characteristics are unlikely
What is a weakness of a natural experiment?
Harder to control extraneous variables, harder to replicate
What is a quasi experiment?
The IV is a naturally occuring difference in people
e.g gender, mental health
strenghts and weaknesses depend on the environment
