types of experiment Flashcards
what are the different types of experiment
laboratory experiment
field experiment
natural experiment
quasi experimenter
what is a laboratory experiment
a laboratory experiment are conducted in highly controlled environments
It is not always conducted in a laboratory
e.g. could be a classroom where conditions can be well controlled
what is a field experiment
in a field experiment, the IV is manipulated in a natural, more everyday setting
what is a natural experiment
when the researcher takes advantage of a pre - existing independent variable
This kind of experiment is called “natural” because the variables would have changed even if the experimenter was not interested
NOTE:
The IV itself is natural not the setting itself. The participants may be tested in a lab. In a field experiment however, the setting is natural
what is a quasi - experiment
Quasi experiments have an IV that is based on existing differences between people
e.g. age or gender
no one has manipulated this variable but it simple exists
e.g.
if the anxiety levels of phobic and non phobic patients were compared, the IV of having a phobia would not have come about through any experimental manipulation
