self report design Flashcards
what are the different types of closed questions
closed questions can be further divided into different types:
- likert scales
- rating scales
- fixed choice option
What are likert scales
In likert scales, respondents indicate their agreement (or otherwise) with statement rings a scale of usually five points.
The scale ranges from strongly agree to strongly disagree
What are likert scales
In likert scales, respondents indicate their agreement (or otherwise) with statement rings a scale of usually five points.
The scale ranges from strongly agree to strongly disagree
What is rating scale
Ratings scales work in a similar way to likert scales but respondents have to identify a value that represents their feeling about a particular topic
What is a fixed choice option
A fixed choice option includes a list of possible options and respondents are required to indicate those that apply to them
How do you design an interview
Most interviews involve and interview schedule
And interview schedule is a list of questions that the interviewer intend s to cover
These questions should be standardised for each participant in order to reduce the contamjnatingeffect of interviewer bias
Typically, the interviewer will take notes throughout the interview or altenrantivel, the interview may be recorded to analyse later
Where should most interviews take place (designing an interview)
Most interviews usually involve an interview and a single participant
Group interviews may be appropriate especially in group clinical settings
In the case to one to one interviews , the interviewer should conduct the interview in a quiet room awayfirk other people as this will increase the likelihood tha the interviewer will open up
What should the interviewer do in order to make the interviewee more comfortable
You should begin with neutral questions to make the participants to feel more comfortable and as way of establishing a rapport
The interviewees must be reminded on several occasions that their answers will be treated in the steixted confidence (privacy and confidentiality)
This is especially important if the topics are sensitive and personal
How do you write good questions
Clarity is key when designing questionnaires and interviews. If the questions are not clear it can negatively impact the quality of information receive
Therefore the researcher should avoid:
Overuse of jargon
Emotive language and leading questions
Double barrelled questions and double negatives
Why is using jargon bad when writing questions
Jargon is a technical term that is not familiar to those within a specialised field or area
e.g.
Do you agree maternal deprivation in infanhood inevitably lead toaffevtonless psyholopathy in later life
This question is unnecessarily complex- the best questions are simple and easily understood
Why should questions avoid emotive language and leading questions
Sometimes, the author’s attitude towards a particular topic is clear from the way in which the question phrases - leanding questions might guide the respondent towards a particular answer
Emotive language should be replaced with more neutral alternatives
Why must questions avoid double-barreled questions and double negatives
A double barrelled questions contain two questions in one; the issue being the respondent may agree with one half of the qusestion and not the other half
Questions that include double negatives can be difficult for the respondents to decipher
