what is formal employment
employment that is officially recognised- workers are protected by the laws of the country, rules to how long you can work for, age of workers and health and safety. workers pay tax to the government out of wages they earn
what is informal employment
employment that is unofficial- jobs aren’t taxed or regulated by the government. people often work long hours in dangerous conditions for little pay
what is the primary sector
involves collecting raw materials eg farming, mining, fishing and forestry
what is the secondary sector
involves turning a product into another product (manufacturing) eg making textiles, furniture, chemicals, steel and cars
what is the tertiary sectory
involves providing a service eg financial help, nursing, retail, police force and transport
where is formal and informal employment common
developing countries- many are informal workers
emerging countries- numb of informal work decreases as the country develops
developed countries- few informal workers
what does the economic sector look like for developing countries
lots of people work in the low skilled tertiary sector, few people work secondary bc there’s not enough money to invest in tech, small percentage work in high skilled tertiary jobs
what does the economic sector look like for emerging countries
secondary sector= high
lots of tertiary low skilled jobs
what does the economic sector look like for developed countries
fewer work in secondary
most work in tertiary as there’s a skilled and educated workforce and theres high demand
some employment in the quaternary sector bc they have high skilled labour and money
