Primary- collection of raw materials, most essential, labour intensive, risk to physical health, UK farmers isolated
Secondary- manufacturing of materials, regular income in factories (annual work), exploitation of workers, long hours, exposure to harsh chemicals eg Rana Plaza, Bangladesh
Tertiary- provision of services egg education, higher salaries, office-based, regular hours, limited outdoor interactions
Quaternary- tech-based eg IT and computer programming, skill demanding for educated and expertise, limited environmental and social interactions
Economy activity in UK (3)
Rural- primary, agriculture in Cumbria, low paid and manual work
Urban- secondary and tertiary, 80% of total employment, London low primary
Specific areas- quaternary around important universities and in m4 corridor (London, Reading, Bristol, Cardiff)
around Oxford and Cambridge- firms locate due to access to talented workers
Employment types (6)
Permanent/ Fixed Contracts- traditional, long-term or short term
Temporary Workers- agency staff (short notice by recruitment agencies), volunteers eg charity workers
Self-employed- freelancers consultants, run own business
Zero hours contract- no guaranteed work 0-40 hours a week, no obligations
Seasonal work- agriculture harvest time (migrants from EU/tourism in London in summer
Illegal work- poor conditions, migrants vulnerable as unfamiliar, Qatar 2022 World Cup, 1200 migrant workers death in Qatari infrastructure since 2010
