Types of diabetes Flashcards
MODY 2
patient looks like they have diabetes
follows an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritence
mild in nature
little evidence of worsening glucose over time
a mutation in the glucokinase gene, effectively the glucose sensor
the blood glucose level is ‘reset’ at a higher level which is between 6-8mmol/l and usually managed by diet and complications are rare except in pregnancy.
MODY 3 hepatic nuclear factor 1 (HNF-1 alpha)
most common type of MODY
strong family history of diabetes
can be misdiagnosed of type 1 but patients will be autoantibody negative at diagnosis
MODY 1 HNF-4 alpha
similar to HNF-1 alpha but much less common
MODY 5 HNF4-alpha
very rare
strong association with kidney problems (renal cysts0
LADA - latent auto immune diabetes in daults
a form of type I that presents later in life
insulinopaenia thin losing weight thirst and tierdness very high random glucose and autoantibodies
imapired fasting hyperglycaemia
fasting blood glucose 6.2mmol/l
do an OGGT
high risk of developing type II but can be reversed.
