ACromegaly Flashcards
Acromegaly
Enlargement of hands and feet
Deepening of voice
Blurred vision
Bilateral hemianopia
Acromegaly can be caused by a GH secreting pituitary adenoma.
Ix:
OGTT as first line
GH suppression test
Serum IGF1 test
acromegaly is a disorder of the growth hormone (GH) production
pituitary macroadenoma
can be produced ectopically by non-endocrine tumors like lung, pancreatic or ovarian.
primary investigation is to measure insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1)
GH is pulsatile and short half life so difficult to get a reliable averagee reading
if IGF1 is high then do a glucose tolerance test to confirm (glucose should normally suppress GH but If GH levels are not suppressed then a diagnosis of acromegaly is confirmed)
