types of dentine Flashcards
name the 5 types of dentine?
- peritubular dentine
- interglobular dentine
- secondary dentine
- sclerotic/translucent dentine
- reparative dentine
what is peritubular dentine like and where is it found?
- highly mineralised
- found within each dentine tubule
- increases with age reducing the diameter of the tubule
what is interglobular dentine like?
area of unmineralised dentine
when is secondary dentine formed?
gradually throughout age it is slowly formed
where is secondary dentine laid down?
at pulpal end of primary dentine
what does secondary dentine do to the pulp chamber?
makes it smaller with age
what is sclerotic/translucent dentine?
- tubules can be totally obliterated with age giving a translucent apperance
name a type of irregular secondary dentine
reparative dentine
3 examples of when reparative dentine will be laid down?
- caries
- excessive wear
- cavity prep
severe stimulus will cause what to happen?
dead tract/empty tubule due to necrosis of the tubule following odontoblast destruction
what can be the difficulty about sclerotic dentine?
fear that root will break during extraction
