Types Of Data Flashcards
What is qualitative data
-> in the form of info which is length & with lots of data
-> like thoughts, feelings etc
-> through questionnaires, interviews, reports
Advantage of qualitative data
-> can gain lots of detail and reasoning + context behind answers, which will help generate new hypothesis’ for data and understand fully why
What is quantitative data
-> data expressed numerically, which can be analysed easily using stats
Strength of quantitative data
-> easier and much quicker to analyse
-> data more objective / less likely to be as bias
Weakness of quantitative data
-> less detailed so can miss out on interesting information
-> narrower in scope and meaning
-> may not always rep real life
Weakness of qualitative data
-> takes long to analyse
-> hard to generalise and make conclusions
-> have to be subject when analysing
What’s primary data
Original data collected specifically for the purpose of the investigation by the researcher
-> arrives first hand from the participants themselves
-> e.g. through a questionnaire, interview, experiment etc
Pro’s & cons of primary data
Pros: authentic & fit for the purpose
Cons: time, effort & money consuming
What’s secondary data
-> data that has been collected by someone other than the person who is conducting the research, e.g. using others case studies etc
Pros & cons of secondary data
-> data already exists and therefore not expensive to gather
-> but can be misinterpreted, leading to the wrong conclusions + hard to find data that fits the exact purpose of study sometimes
What is meta-analysis
A form of the research method using secondary data
-> when data from a large number of studies with the same questions & methods of research are combined, for researchers to discuss the findings and conclusions (qualitative analysis form)
Strengths and limitations of meta-analysis
-> allows us to view data with more confidence + data can be generalised across a larger population
-> however, may be prone to publication bias (researcher might use only relevant studies, not ones with negative / non-significant results)
