The Sign Test Flashcards
What are the 2 kinds of statistics
- descriptive statistics
- inferential statistics
What are descriptive statistics
- measures of central tendency & dispersion etc
Stuff presented in a graph
What are inferential statistics
To do with significance
Statistical tests
Conditions to use the sign test
-> looking for a difference (not association or correlation e.g. happiness b4 or after a holiday)
-> using a repeated measures design (same group of participants before and after)
-> nominal data (sorted in categories e.g. male/female)
For the sign test, results are significant if the calculated value is […] than the critical value in the table
Less than or equal to
What is the N value
Total amount of how many pluses and minuses there are
What’s the calculated (S) value
The total of the less frequent sign (plus or minus, whichever there’s less of)
E.g. if it’s -+-+-+-
S = 3 as there’s 3 pluses & 5 minuses
