What’s compliance?
Agreeing with group but keeping personal opinions- temporary change in behaviour.
What’s identification?
Valuing membership so they accept to be part of group- don’t fully agree.
What’s internalisation?
Deepest level- personal opinions genuinely change. -permanent.
what’s ISI?
When correct behaviour is uncertain, we look to the majority for guidance on how to behave because we want to be correct. ISI results in internalisation, permanently adopting views of majority.
What’s NSI?
in situations when individual wants to appear normal and be one of majority, so they are approved and not rejected. Results in compliance.
Asch supports NSI, how?
Participants chose incorrect answer when it was said by confederates. After being interviews, they confirmed to avoid rejection by others. Trying to fit in.
Jeness supports ISI, how?
Asked pts alone, then in groups to make the guess of how many jelly beans in the jar. He was found individuals second guess moved closer to groups guess demonstrating ISI.
