Q

Test for chlorides

  1. Test
  2. Observation
  3. Confirmation
A
  1. Add a few drops of AgNO3 to the halide solution and shake
  2. A white precipitate of silver chloride forms ( AgCl(s) )
  3. Add HNO3- if it doesn’t dissolve then the salt is a chloride

Q

Test for sulphates

  1. Test
  2. Observation
  3. Confirmation
A
  1. Add a few drops of either BaNO3 or BaCl2
  2. A white precipitate of BaSO4
  3. Add HNO3 - if it doesn’t dissolve then it’s sulphate

Q

Test carbonates (CO2 3-)

  1. Test
  2. Observation
  3. Confirmation
A
  1. Add Ba(NO3)2 or BaCl2
  2. A white precipitate of BaCO3 forms
  3. Add concentrated HNO3
If it does dissolve and disappears then CO2 (g) is formed:
    BaCO3 + 2HNO3 —> Ba(NO3)2 + H2O + CO2
