Chemical Bonding Flashcards
What is intramolecular bonding?
A bond which occurs between atoms within molecules
What is covalent bonding?
It is a sharing of at least one pair of electrons by two non-metal atoms
What is polar covalent bonding? (Definition and Characteristics)
- Unequal sharing of bonding electrons leading to a dipole forming.
- Two or more non - metal atoms
- Eneg difference = 0,1 - 1,7 ( <0 but <=1,7)
What is non-polar covalent bonding? (Definition and Characteristics)
- It is the equal sharing of bonding electrons
- found between non-metals
- diatomic molecules
- it is pure (non-polar) covalent bonding when eneg = 0
What is ionic bonding? (Definition)
A transfer of electrons and subsequent electrostatic attraction
What is the eneg difference for it to be ionic bonding?
Greater or equal to 1,8 (>=1,8)
What is metallic bonding? (Definition)
Electrostatic attraction between the positively charged atomic nuclei of metal atoms and a sea of delocalised electrons
Delocalised electron cloud definition?
Electrons that are not at a specific point in a group of atoms
Intermolecular force
A force of attraction between molecules, ions or atoms of noble gases
Electronegativity
A measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a pair of bonding electrons
