COMPACT BONE
Forms periphery of all bones and a portion of the shaft of long bones. 
Contains many cylindrical shaped units that run length wise. (Haversian systems)
SPONGY BONE
cancellous bone
Found in centre of long bones.
Contains thin strips, called trabeculae, giving it a spongy appearance. (arranged to provide maximum strength like braces of a building.)
LONG BONES
Longer than they are wide. Long, slender.
Femur, tibia, fibula, humerus, ulna, radius, metatarsals, metacarpals.
SHORT BONES
Generally small, cube shaped, and contain multiple articulating surfaces. Boxy.
Carpals (wrist), tarsals (ankle).
FLAT BONES
Possess a broad, flat surface.
Thin, parallel surfaces.
Roof of skull, sternum, ribs, scapula.
IRREGULAR BONES
Oddly shaped and do not fit well in other shape or size categories.
Complex shapes with short, flat, notched, or rigid surfaces.
Spinal vertebrae, pelvic bones, some skull bones.
SESAMOID BONES
Small bones embedded in tendons and ligaments.
Small, flat, shaped like sesame seeds.
Found inside tendons, near knee joints, hands and feet, throat.
