Articulations Flashcards
SYNARTHROSES
Functional classification of Fibrous joints.
Movement is absent or limited. Common in axial skeleton. Includes most joints in the skull (sutures).
FIBROUS JOINTS
Structural classification of synarthroses.
Joined by, dense, fibrous, connective tissue. Do not have a joint capsule.
AMPHIARTHROSES
Functional classification of cartilaginous joints.
Slightly moveable joints. Common and axial skeleton and include joints between vertebrae, between ribs and breast bone.
CARTILAGINOUS JOINTS
structural classification of amphiarthroses.
Joined by Cartlidge. Do not have a joint capsule. Allow more movement than fibrous joints, less movement, then synovial joints.
Pelvis.
DIANTHROSES
Functional classification of synovial joints.
Freely, moveable joints. Common in appendicular skeleton and includes joints in shoulders, hips, elbows, and knees.
SYNOVIAL JOINTS
Structural classification of Dianthroses .
Have synovial membranes, and are enclosed by a joint capsule, which contains a joint cavity.
Filled with synovial fluid.
Most moveable and common joint.
JOINT CAPSULE
Sleeve around joint.
JOINT CAVITY
Inner area lined with synovial membranes. Filled with synovial fluid.
SYNOVIAL FLUID
Like oil.
Viscous fluid, providing nutrition and lubrication.
Helps of joints move freely without undue friction.
Only gets made if joints are getting used.
BURSAE
Sac like structure lined with synovial membrane and synovial fluid.
Provide a cushion that protects a muscle’s tendon from rubbing against the bone during muscular contraction.
MONOAXIAL / UNIAXIAL JOINTS
Type of synovial joint.
Limited to movement along a single axis, such as rotation, flexion, extension, and supination and pronation.
Hinge joints; elbow, joint, knee.
Pivot joints; C1 and C2 joint, proximal radioulnar joint.
BIAXIAL JOINTS
Ellipsoidal (condylar): metacarpophalangeal joint, metatarsal phalangeal joints.
Saddle: first carpometacarpal joint.
TRIAXIAL JOINTS
Gliding(plane): facet joints, intercarpal joints, intertarsals.
Ball and socket: hip joint (femoral head in acetabulum), glenohumeral joint.
