Types Of Bond Flashcards
Covalent bond
A bond between two non-metal atoms that share at least one pair of electrons.
Very strong bonds.
Hydrogen bonds
Formed when there are electrostatic attraction between a proton in one molecule and an electronegative atom in another molecule.
Very quick to form and break. (weak)
Ionic bonds
Bond between a metal and non-metal.
Formed when atoms donate or receive electrons from another atom to gain a full other shell.
Opposite electrostatic charges form on each atom.
Strong bonds
Hydrophobic interactions
Very weak bonds between non-polar molecules as they try to avoid contact with polar molecules like water.
Easily broken.
Disulphide bonds
A type of covalent bond between two sulfur atoms in a molecule.
Very strong.
Glycosidic bonds
Forms between sugar molecules to form carbohydrates.
Ester bonds
Link fatty acids to glycerol in lipids
Peptide bond
The bond that joins amino acids together to form proteins.
