Lipids Flashcards
What are lipids?
Non-polymer, biological molecules that are insoluble in water
Made of fatty acids combining with an alcohol molecule
What is a fatty acid?
A long hydrocarbon tail attached to a carboxyl head.
Can be saturated or unsaturated
What is an unsaturated fatty acid?
Contain double carbon to carbon bonds
Causes the tail to kink and reduces melting point
What is a saturated fatty acids?
Contain no double carbon bonds
Long straight chain
High melting point
What is an ester bond?
Bond formed when an acid reacts with an alcohol through a condensation reaction
COO
What is a triglyceride?
Glycerol reacted with 3 fatty acids in a condensation reaction
Forms 3 water molecules
Non-polar and insoluble in water
What is the function of a triglyceride?
-energy source
-good insulators
-can be used as a water source
What are phospholipids?
2 fatty acids bonded with an ester bond to a phosphate group through a condensation reaction.
Polar with a hydrophilic head and hydrophilic tail
Soluble in water
What is the function of phospholipids?
Cell membranes
