Adoration prayer
Praising or adoring God got what he is - for example ‘O God how great and marvellous you are’
Thanksgiving
Thanking God either for his general goodness or for some specific thing such as getting better from an illness
Confession
Confessing sins to God and asking for his forgiveness and determining to do better
Supplication
Asking for God’s help either for oneself or for others.
What is prayer?
Can be defined ‘ the raising of the heart and mind to God’ attempting to experience a relationship with God.
What is the lords prayer
-Expresses adoration ‘hallowed by our name our kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven’
- expresses supplication and confession.

- express their innermost thoughts to God as a prayer

When do catholics pray
- set times before they wake up or before bed

Of God enters their mind. - ‘many set aside time each day for informal prayer.
Why do catholics pray
- can help a person to get things into perspective , by focusing on God they can be brought to the reality of life.
- prayers thanksgiving help a person not to be selfish but to realise they depend on others and they shouldn’t take things for granted
Why do catholics pray
-prayer of confession helps to stop a person from holding in their guilt and come to terms with their actions.
-prayers ofsupplication can help a person to
feel they are doing something for those who suffer and also inspire them to take practical action as well
Why is it important to have a variety of prayers and worship
- private worship people need to be able to worship in private as they can communicate with God one to one and express their internal feelings.
- public worship gives. A sense of belonging to a whole community of believers and to feel the strength of faith.
- worship in home - people need to be able to worship at home as it is the heart of people’s lives and worshipping as a family.
Importance of prayer
- strengthens relationship with god - central to catholic life way to seek guidance express gratitude and request strength “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” (James 4:8, ESV)
This verse shows that when you take the step to connect with God through prayer, He responds by coming closer to you, strengthening your bond with Him. - fulfils Jesus command to prayer - taught to follow example of Jesus in Luke 5:16 “But Jesus withdrew to lonely places and prayed”
why might prayer not be as important
-misuse of prayer and actions speak louder than words acts of charity are more valuable and kindness James 2:17 “faith by itself , if it is not accompanied by action is dead”
- orthodox Christians place great emphasis on liturgical life of the church and sacraments particularly divine liturgy as they are more important for salvation “Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.’” (John 3:5, NIV) emphasis necessity of baptism.
