Types 1 diabetes was once known as what? (2)
Juvenile onset or insulin dependent diabetes
Type 1 DM is an autoimmune disorder
But why is that?
( it also has a genetic link )
Because the body develops antibodies against insulin and or pancreatic B cells that produce insulin resulting in not enough insulin to Survive
Generally type 1 diabetes effects who?
Accounts for 5-10% of all people with diabetes
People under the age of 40
What is the onset of the disease? (Type 1 diabetes )?
Islet cells autoantibodies are present for months to years before symptoms occur
Manifestations develop when what?
Then a rapid onset with?
Pancreas can no longer produce insulin
Ketoacidosis
What are the 3 Ps for diabetes ?
Polydipsia ( thirsty ! )
Polyuria ( pee to much )
Polyphagia ( hungry ! )
Type 1 diabetes will forever require what?
Exogenous insulin

Weight loss
Weakness

Without insulin, the patient will develop DKA, a life threatening condition causing metabolic acidosis
