Type 1 and 2 errors Flashcards
What is a type 1 error?
When the researcher has used a lenient P value. The researcher thinks the results are significant when they are actually due to chance/error. They wrongly accept the alternative and wrongly reject the null.
What is a type 2 error?
When the researcher uses a stringent P-value. They think that the results are not significant when they could be significant. They wrongly accept the null hypothesis and wrongly reject the alternative.
What is the difference between type 1
and type 2 errors?
Type 1 error wrongly rejects the null hypothesis
Type 2 error wrongly accepts the null hypothesis
What’s the significance level?
5%
How to check for a type one error?
Compare the calculated value to the critical value at a more STRINGENT p-value. If results are not significant then a type 1 error has occurred.
How to check for a type 2 error?
Compare the calculated value to the critical value using a more LENIENT p-value. If the results are significant then a type 2 error has occurred.
