2
Q
give an example of an antithyroid drug?
A
tapazole = inhibits synthesis of TH
3
Q
explain radioactive iodine therapy
A
- T3 and T4 need iodine to be synthesized
- when it binds to thyroid cells, it emits radiation and forms free radicals
- given in a low dose according to target amount of cells you want to have left
4
Q
what is the goal of radioactive iodine therapy?
A
decrease overproduction without eradicating T3/T4
5
Q
explain surgery
A
you would remove the thyroid gland, or a portion of it
6
Q
what can happen with secretion in relation to these treatments?
A
you can easily go from hypersecretion to hyposecretion
