Thyrotoxicosis Flashcards
thryotoxicosis
complx of hyperthyroidism
when is thyrotoxicosis seen?
if pt is not treated or if hyperthyroidism is not yet Dx
what is thyrotoxicosis a presentation of?
grave’s disease
what can it be precipitated by?
stress (ex. resp infection, DKA, thyroidectomy)
what are the manifestations of thyrotoxicosis?
- fever
- severe CV & CNS problems
- increased metabolic rate & altered pathways
- increased mortality rate
- increased demand for O2 & waste removal
- abundance of metabolic heat
explain the mnftn of metabolic heat
increased metabolism = increased prod of ATP and heat –> sweating and vasodilation (increased tolerance to heat, compensate heat loss mechanisms)
explain the mftn of increased metabolic rate
use up CHO stores, which leads to increased protein and lipid catabolism (breakdown)
explain CV and CNS problems
CV: angina, tachycardia, CHF
CNS: delirium, agitation, irritability, insomnia
explain increased demand for O2 & waste removal
will have increased HR and CO
