France (1685)-La Salle overshot expedition to New Orleans and landed on Texas coast.
FAILURE-His own men killed him and Indians destroyed fort and killed or captured settlers

Spain again (1689) Decided to increase settlements (missions and presidios) to fend off French by bringing up Spanish settlers from Mexico (Tejanos)
