Two meatuses and an Airway Flashcards
Where is the mastoid sinus?
posterior to the ear.
What nerve passes through a small canal between the jugular and internal carotid artery?
Tympanic nerve. This comes from CN IX and continues on to become the lesser petrosal, then passes through foramen ovale into the otic ganglion in the IT fossa. From there, GVE fibers will hop onto the auriculotemporal nerve (a CN V3 branch) and ride to the parotid gland
What is the roof of the middle ear called?
tegmen tympani
tegmen means roof
What does the tensor tympani do?
dampens noises, such as those produced during chewing
What innervates tensor tympani?
Remember MAST-MATT: Muscles innervated by mandibular nerve (CN V3)
MAST = mastication: (masseter, lateral pterygoids, medial pterygoids, temporalis)
MATT = Mylohyoid, AnteriorDigastric, TensorTympani, and TensorVeliPalatini
