Tuturu Flashcards
Briefly describe the program
Tuturu was established in 2017 by the NZ Drug Foundation.
Tuturu has the purpose to help secondary schools and health care providers work together to enable secondary students years 9-13 to learn, be well and be prepared for a world where alcohol and other drugs exist.
The program aims to ensure secondary school aged children can think critically to analyse situations that involve alcohol and other drugs through the ready made resources avaliable for schools.
The program incorporates Developing personal skills, Strengthening community action, Creating supportve environments and reorienting the health service.
What actions from the ottawa charter does Tuturu use?
- Develop personal skills- Tuturu has the aim to ensure young people develop the critical thinking skills to ensure they can make the right decision in society when and if alcohol and other drugs are.
2.Create Supportive environments:
Having the Tuturu resources at school can open up communicationn regarding alcohol and other drugs and provide a supportive environment with the right resources to talk about this subject. - Strengthen community action:
Getting teachers and health care providers in agreement on how to encourage and enable young people to make the right decisions in regards to alcohol and other drugs.
4.Reorient the health service-
By including health care providers in the Tuturu aim it is changing the health service to focus on educating individuals in the hopes to minimise the need for curative treatments.
What are the strengths of Tuturu
Resources for both educators and health care providers to build a bridge of understanding how to encourage young people to make the right decisions with alcohol and drugs
Providing schools with ready made resources that fit into the curriculum make it easy to implement.
Focusing on secondary students years 9-13. Focusing on the age that is most likely to have their first experiences with making decisions in an environment with alcohol and other drugs.
Weaknesses of Tuturu
Does not include ‘build healthy public policy’ resulting in not all schools needing to add the Tuturu resources to their curriculum causing inequalities between students from different schools.
Tuturu do not include the focus age range of students years 9-13 in their development of the program, this minimising the input of this age range which could give beneficial insight into the best ways to implement, engage and educate students of that age range.
Tuturu resrouces only go up to students year 13 (secondary school)
Increase effectiveness of Tuturu
Going to government level and ensuring Tuturu resources are put into the curriculum would ensure all students years 9-13 will benefit from their resources and all have the same knowledge level regarding critical thinking around alcohol and other drugs.
(Build health public policy)
Develop roles in Tuturu to work with the community through platforms that have young people invloved such as churches and sport associations. (Strengethn community action)
Incorporate Tuturu resources into Tertiary provider services such as mental health and wellbeing counselling services at University of Otago could use these resources for individuals that come in with alcohol and drug issues.
How to increase Maori participation in Tuturu
-Focus on implementing Tuturu resources into Kura kaupapa Maori.
-Focus on getting the Tuturu resources used by Maori healthcare providers
-Develop Tuturu resources in full Maori language
