What is the upstream-downstream factors concept in regards to health

A

The upstream- down stream concept emphasizes where the health determinents sit.
Upstream being at a governmental and environmental level and downstream being at a individual level.
For example-
Food advertising is at a government level (upstream) as to what is allowed to be advertised when and where, as advertising can reach alot of people it can have a large negative or positive effect on a communities health.
At the downstream level an individuals personal choice as to what they buy and consume.

A

-Incorporate treaty of waitangi principles partnership, participation and protection into health promotion.
-Ensure tangata whenua are invloved in every stage of the health promotion planning and running.
-Develop spokespeople roles of the ethnicities that the promotion is intended to benefit.
-Distribute resources/services according to need.
-Ensure easy access to health promotion resources/services
-Use a health impact assessment tool to ensure promotion is benefitting those in need.
