What are the steps in teaching visual scanning?
A
- Demonstrate how eye and head movement may be used to compensate for impairment
- Commence scanning technique while static (i.e. seated)
- Teach an organsed search pattern requiring the person to:
- scan all of visual space
- scan left to right and top to bottom
- grid perimeter search
- use an ‘anhcor’ on far left or right to organise the search pattern - Emphasise conscious attention to the visual detail
- Teach self-checking of work and tasks
- Include practice of the search strategy in increasingly ‘busy environments and tasks
- Use strategy when mobilising and increase difficulty in a graded way
